The recipes that follow are easy, wholesome and home-cooked, and will hopefully bring enhanced nutrition and variety to hectic mornings.

Skip the Oatmeal Packets

Prepared oatmeal packets make a convenient and quick breakfast, but nearly all of them contain loads of added sugar, as well as other additives such as gums, coloring and preservatives. You can make your own version easily: Simply combine old-fashioned rolled oats, dried fruits, nuts, spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg, and a pinch of salt in a large container. Scoop out 1/3 cup at a time, combine with 2/3 cup milk, nut milk or water, and microwave, just as you do those packets. Or, combine steel-cut oats with liquid and spices, let them soak overnight in the refrigerator, then add toppings.
