Golden milk seems to be one of life’s great pleasures. The soothing color, spices and creamy texture are truly delicious. I like to use coconut milk to make this drink, but the milk is really just a carrier for the spices. You get to use whatever milk you enjoy best. The spices that go into the milk are really the star of the show. It is those spices that help make this delectable tea a powerhouse of health benefits.

What makes this milk golden?

The magic ingredient in this tea is turmeric. It is a spice that has been used in cooking,  medicines and religious ceremonies for thousands of years. It was noticed by Marco Polo in 1280 for having properties like saffron. The many uses of turmeric made it part of the spice trade and soon enough, its virtues were spread from the east to the west.

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. The spice has chemical compounds called curcuminoids. Curcumin found in turmeric is said to help liver functions, reduce bad cholesterol, promote healthy cell growth and with its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, it has even been said it will help fight cold infections and reduce symptoms.

Along with the health benefits of the turmeric, this golden milk calls for ginger, cinnamon and a pinch of black pepper. The ginger also aids in digestive health and can reduce upset stomachs. Cinnamon is a spice that is used often to fight infections, promote heart health as well as having its own anti-inflammatory properties. The black pepper in this drink helps to aid the body in absorbing all these powerhouse nutrients. You can start to see why this tea can be a great addition to your daily routine.

What you will need:

Coconut Milk – 2 Cups

Turmeric – 1 1/2 teaspoons

Ginger Paste – 1/4 teaspoon

Cinnamon – 1 stick or 1 teaspoon ground

Black Pepper – a pinch

Optional… I like to garnish my cups with a cinnamon stick and a sprinkle of nutmeg. You can also use raw honey to sweeten to taste.

Warning… this can stain as not only is turmeric delicious, it is also used in dyes and cosmetics.

Directions:

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the coconut milk, turmeric, ginger and black pepper. Whisk well, until everything is combined and the milk is frothy. Add a whole stick of cinnamon. Allow to slowly heat, whisking often. Do not let the milk boil. Once everything is well combined and heated you can serve and garnish. This recipe will make 2 cups of tea.

This is a caffeine-free drink that can be enjoyed any time of the day. I like to use it as part of my settling in, nighttime routine. It helps to relax me. I take the time that I enjoy the tea at a time for a mindful moment to just relax and be still.
