When shopping for a new clothes-washing machine, look for one that meets the standards of Energy Star, a government-backed energy-efficiency program. Energy Star-qualified washers use an average of 50 percent less energy and 40 percent less water than conventional washers. In one year, a qualifying model can save you between $45 and $125 in energy costs and $20 to $35 on your water bill.

It’s not a wash:  Compare washers’ electricity and water use. (All numbers are averages and vary according to model and usage.)
