Makes about 1/2 cup of lemon furniture polish. SERVINGS

Ingredients

  • 5 lemons
  • 3/4 cup safflower oil
  • Peeler or knife
  • Cheesecloth

Directions

    • Wash and dry lemons. Using a peeler or knife, remove only the yellow peel and not the white portion.
    • Boil water in a double boiler, or fill a saucepan about half full with water and bring to a gentle boil; reduce heat to a slow simmer.
    • Place peels in the top of a double boiler or in a heat-resistant bowl firmly set over the saucepan; add oil to peels.
    • Heat peels for 2 hours, being certain that oil does not boil. Remove from heat; let stand 30 minutes.
    • Place a strainer over a measuring cup; cover strainer with cheesecloth.
    • Pour oil into cheesecloth; use a wooden spoon to press on peel.
    • Squeeze cheesecloth to extract as much oil as possible. Remove strainer and cheesecloth. Cool completely.
    • Pour oil into a glass bottle, such as a small Mason jar. Add a small amount to a cotton cloth; rub onto wood, going with the grain.
    • Remove any remaining polish with a clean cotton cloth. Cover, and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
    • Remove oil from the refrigerator about 20 minutes before using.
