Product Review: Numi Organic Tea Offers Pu-erh Teas

At my house, iced tea goes fast. My boyfriend Andrew is to blame. When we started dating, he would always have a water bottle full of iced tea within five feet of him. As the months went on, I found myself stealing swigs out of his glass, and now, 2 1/2 years later, his habit has rubbed off onto me. A box of 100 Lipton tea bags is sometimes reduced to two or three tea bags within two weeks, and pitchers disappear in a mere 24 hours.

Turns out, this “addiction” of ours is actually beneficial. Studies have shown that tea contains antioxidants that can help our cardiovascular systems, minimizing the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke. Cancer prevention, oral health and bone health are also often cited in this list of benefits, and a little caffeine boost is an added bonus.

Iced tea can provide many benefits to your heart, bones, and immune system.

Turns out, iced tea fanatics can enjoy all of these health benefits (and more) while benefiting the planet as well.

Numi Organic Tea offers many different products, including iced tea, tea bags, flowering teas, and loose leaf tea. Each of these products is organic, which means the tea is grown without the use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers or herbicides. This benefits the health of the farmers, his neighbors and the environment.

The company also lends the earth a helping hand by packaging its products in an eco-friendly fashion. All of the cardboard used in outer packaging is made of 85 percent consumer waste, and it is printed using soy-based inks. Most of the company’s products are recyclable as well.

Numi Organic Tea now offers flavored iced pu-erh teas. Pu-erh tea, also known as “skinny tea” in Taiwan since it has 40 percent less sugar than other iced teas, is a post-fermented tea produced in China. It’s definitely not your everyday iced tea. Traditional iced teas are oxidized over an 8-hour period. Pu-erh teas, however, are fermented for 60 days, which results in unique bold flavors and more antioxidants than green tea. More antioxidants mean more of the benefits mentioned above for your body. And don’t let the reduced sugar claim scare you off. With the obesity epidemic in America still going strong, less sugar is a definite plus, especially if you drink as much iced tea as me. The tea is offered in many flavors, including peach, mango, and mint. The tea still provides a delicious, tart flavor that leaves you feeling invigorated, sans the extra calories.
