Honeybees are disappearing fast, and nobody really knows why.

Honeybees are responsible for pollination that <a title=”directly affects” href=”http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/06/26/honey-bee-crisis-could-pu_n_109505.html” target=”_blank”>directly affects agriculture and farming businesses; in short, decreasing honeybees, increasing food prices.

In 2006, beekeepers reported losses of 30-90 percent of their hives, according to the USDA. Called “Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD),” this phenomenon has been attributed to everything from pesticide use to parasites and pathogens.

Now, big companies, such as Häagen-Dazs and <a title=”Burt’s Bees” href=”http://www.burtsbees.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10051&productId=17013″ target=”_blank”>Burt’s Bees, are contributing part of their profits to honeybee health research.

One way you can help yourself and the bees is to try the classic Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm. Five percent of the sales from the balm will go to CCD research (up to $75,000). It retails for $2.99 for .15 ounces, and is packaged in 50 percent post-industrial recycled plastic.

If you’ve never tried Burt’s Bees lip balm, here is the basic rundown of its ingredients:

Beeswax, coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, peppermint oil, lanolin, tocopherol, rosemary leaf extract, canola oil, soybean oil

If you have super-sensitive skin, be aware that lanolin is an allergen and can cause irritation.

What do you think of the honeybee crisis, and how do we help fix it?
