Knowing the right times to
sow garden crops can be a challenge, even for experienced gardeners. MotherEarth News takes the guesswork out of planting with the new When to Plant app.

The app provides concise
growing information on more than 120 vegetables, herbs, fruit, cover crops and
companion planting flowers – including when to start planting indoors and out,
and the range of possible harvest periods. When to Plant also can recommend
separate spring and fall planting dates for cool-season crops in areas with hot
summers and long growing seasons.

When to Plant uses a database
of almost 5,000 weather stations across North America
to find frost dates for users’ ZIP codes, and calculates the best range of
planting dates for each crop. Gardeners can also access U.S. Weather Service
long-range forecasts to determine if adverse weather is predicted for their
area, which may influence when to plant.

“We believe gardeners will
welcome the custom planting schedules that the When to Plant app provides,
conveniently combined with basic growing advice,” says Cheryl
Long, editor in chief of Mother Earth News.

Users can view plants
alphabetically, by sowing month or by crops that can be planted immediately in
their area. When to Plant also includes advice on soil types, sun requirements,
sowing instructions, troubleshooting tips and how to harvest crops.

When to Plant is compatible
with the Apple iPhone, iPod touch and iPad iOS 5.0 or later. Users can download
the app for $1.99.
