Like beets? Then drink up! A recent study found that a daily glass of beet juice could help you fight off dementia in the future.
Drinking beet juice increases blood flow to the white matter in the brain’s frontal lobes, degeneration of which is generally associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of cognitive impairment. Beets contain high levels nitrates, which, when mixed good bacteria in the mouth, turn into nitrites. Nitrites open blood vessels, delivering more blood and therefore more oxygen to the brain.
Other foods that contain high levels of nitrates include celery, cabbage and leafy green vegetables such as spinach and lettuces.
