This summer, as you sow and tend your garden, imagine how your corn, zucchini, or fresh herbs could help feed local people who are hungry. Plant A Row for the Hungry encourages gardeners to plant extra and donate the produce to local food banks and soup kitchens, which rarely receive adequate fresh food. Sponsored by the Garden Writers Association, the Plant a Row network motivates gardeners on a national level and tracks donations–about 1.2 million pounds of food during 2002 throughout the United States and Canada. You can become part of the solution by giving extra fruits, vegetables, flowers, and even canned goods to your local food bank.
