Your Valentine’s Day roses become more than a faded memory when they form the base of a beautiful, fragrant potpourri.

• Combine dried ingredients in a glass or plastic bowl: 2 cups dried rose petals, 1/3 cup dried lavender flowers, 1/4 cup dried rose hips, 2 tablespoons cloves, and 2 tablespoons star anise. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons chopped dried orrisroot.

• Add just a few drops of essential oil, either a single kind or a combination. We used essential oils of rose, rose geranium, lavender, and vanilla. Mix.

• Put the potpourri in a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Set it aside for about six weeks while the fragrances blend.
