Redolent with garlic and herbs, this easy bread will whet appetites as it heats.

• Preheat the oven to 350°F. Slice a 1-pound loaf of French bread, down to, but not through, the bottom crust.

• Mince or press 4 cloves of garlic, and finely chop 2 teaspoons fresh oregano and 2 teaspoons fresh parsley.
Stir these into 1 stick softened butter or margarine, along with 1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

• Spread the butter mixture on each slice, wrap the loaf in foil, and bake for 20 minutes. Serve hot.
