Yes, you read that right. If you want to keep those extra pounds at bay, drinking a small glass of beer, wine or spirits each day may help.

Those are the findings of a new study from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. For the study, researchers tracked the alcohol use and weight gain of more than 19,000 women for 13 years. The researchers found that women who didn’t drink at all during that time gained the most weight, whereas the women who had about two drinks a day kept off the pounds the best.

Typically, women in the study consumed on a daily basis either a five-ounce glass of wine, a 12-ounce beer or one mixed drink with a single 1.5-ounce shot, standard drink sizes in the United States. The best drink for avoiding weight gain was red wine, but all types of alcohol studied showed similar results.

I wouldn’t recommend drinking alcohol as your new weight loss method, but it’s always nice to know that habits we might already have are doing us some good–and to be able to tailor them to best fit our needs!

If you’re going to drink a glass of alcohol a day, choose organic options. Organic beer, wine and spirits taste just as good (some say better) than their conventional counterparts but without all the extra toxins.
