Should marijuana be legalized?

00 Gina HeadshotIn case you haven’t heard, today is April 20, otherwise known as 420, the unofficial holiday for weed enthusiasts.

Cannabis is a plant that has become synonymous with marijuana—a drug that is always generating some kind of controversy. Currently, legalized medical marijuana use can be found in California, Colorado and more than 10 other states. According to a poll released by CNN, 41 percent of American adults said they favored legalizing marijuana, while 56 percent opposed. Another poll released by the Pew Research Center found that 45 percent of adults favored legalization while 50 percent opposed.

In 2010, Proposition 19, a California ballot proposition to legalize personal marijuana use for those over the age of 21, was rejected. But despite its defeat, the debate continues. Supporters argue that marijuana, an effective appetite stimulant and pain reliever most well known for its chemotherapy treatment, is harmless and can be used recreationally without ill effects. However, others say that this “gateway drug” would do much more harm than good if legalized.

So now I pose the question to you. Do you think marijuana should be legalized? Why? Answer the question in our comments section below to join the conversation.
