Homemade Fruit Fly Trap

One of the many perks of being an apprentice at Fair Share Farm is learning practical homesteading skills from people who truly walk the walk. Now I can see the skills I’ve read about in homesteading books—Make Your Place: Affordable, Sustainable Nesting Skills by Raleigh Briggs is my go-to these days—and in my favorite Natural Home & Garden and Mother Earth News articles in action as well as learn new ones every day. And right now, I’m really digging this simple homemade fruit fly trap.

Fruit Fly Trap
A mason jar, a piece of paper for the cone, some fruit for bait, and a couple pieces of tape are all it takes to make this simple fruit fly trap. This trap is an effective way to rid your home of these pesky bugs while keeping chemicals out of the equation. Photo By Dani Hurst.

What you’ll need:

·     A mason jar

·     A piece of paper

·     Fruit fly bait (opt for something sweet like some fruit or a melon rind)
