Green Your Life: Green Product Review: Twist Biodegradable Sponges

I want a green dish washing experience as much as the next greenista, but that doesn’t mean my sponge has to be an unnatural neon green color. I never even considered switching sponges as a step toward greener dish washing until I discovered Twist. Nowadays, I’m scrubbing more sustainably with Twist’s line of biodegradable, dye-free and all-natural sponges and scrubbies. Each sponge sports slightly different materials (cellulose, loofah, hemp, agave and bamboo to name a few), but they’re all as effective as they are earth-friendly.

Twist Loofah Sponge
Thanks to dye-free cellulose on one side and hard-working loofah on the other (both all-natural), this versatile sponge pulls double duty. And if you feel your sponge needs a little cleaning of its own, simply drop it into boiling water or microwave it damp for 1 minute. Photo By Dani Hurst.

Loofah Sponge

Of all the Twist sponges I’ve tried, the Loofah Sponge is by far the most useful and versatile one. It features Twist’s “naked sponge” on one side (dye-free cellulose) and a naturally tan scrubby loofah on the other; it’s gentle when you need it, but it can get down and dirty if necessary. Because the sponge is white, I was worried that with use it would quickly become dingy, but I found that as long as you wring it out regularly, it will stay pristine longer.

Twist Ravioli Hemp Scrubber
Perfect for when you need a little muscle behind your sponge but don’t want to scratch surfaces, this scrubby is made of all-natural hemp (an awesome renewable resource). This naturally brown scrubby is also good to use when dealing with spaghetti sauce or other really colorful foods to keep white sponges cleaner. Photo By Dani Hurst.
