Unless you’re a teenager with the benefit of “raging” hormones (and newfound love), passion is probably a little harder to come by in your love life these days. If you feel like your sex drive isn’t what it used to be—and if little blue pills just aren’t your cup of tea—consider some natural tricks and tips to improve your libido.
Aphrodisiacs work in various ways. Some directly stimulate erogenous zones while others affect the mind, releasing inhibitions and passion, or give stamina. Although many aphrodisiacs are more cultural traditions than proven remedies, it certainly can’t hurt your chances to try these natural libido boosters and aphrodisiacs.
Many spices are natural aphrodisiacs. (Logically so—spices are meant to stimulate the senses, after all.) When choosing spices for igniting passion, the hotter, the better. Warming spices such as ginger, cinnamon and cayenne, stimulate circulation and can even promote the production of endorphins, those feel-good hormones. Here are a just a few suggestions of passion-inducing aphrodisiac spices to sprinkle over your next meal:
Anise seed: This natural aphrodisiac was historically added to wedding cakes to stimulate vigor. It also has breath-freshening properties (which always come in handy during intimate moments).
Cayenne pepper: This warming spice improves circulations, creates a feeling of warmth in the body and stimulates the production of endorphins.
Cinnamon: Another warm spice, cinnamon is often included in massage oils for its ability to warm and arouse the body.
Ginger warms the body and has been used in alternative medicine for centuries to treat low libido.
Ginkgo may be well-known for its brain-boosting powers, but this powerful herb can also improve circulation to the genitals.
Additional libido-enhancing herbs and spices include well-known favorites such as turmeric, nutmeg, rosemary and sage. For a complete list, check out our sister publication The Herb Companion’s article “Culinary Herbs for Better Sex.”
Nothing gets the blood pumping like a little old fashioned exercise! Hitting the gym or taking a run can release endorphins and produce the physical high associated with sex, not to mention it improves blood flow to the genitals. Working out on a regular basis can also improve strength and endurance, which in turn can improve your sex life and keep you coming back for mroe.
In addition to being a good workout, yoga can also improve flexibility, and some poses even direct blood flow to the pelvic area, stimulating arousal and tricking your body into getting into the mood.
