Hyggeligt: Comfort & Change

While we shake off the comfort and cold of winter, Ogden is seeking new ways to create a cozy community with our subscribers and online members.

As a teen, I lived in Denmark, and winter was long and dark; Danes spend this time cozied up indoors. Their term for this, hygge, has made it to mainstream media, particularly encompassing the Danes’ remarkable ability to actually enjoy a lightless winter. The hallmark of hygge — or to be hyggeligt — is to get comfy-cozy.

Spring can be ambiguous; part of me doesn’t want to leave my comfy-cozy nest and begin the labors associated with spring, and part of me is twitchy for more fresh air. But the seasons change, and so do I. We hope this issue, along with the rest of the magazines at Ogden Publications, provides inspiration: a can-do attitude, community connections, interest in self-sufficiency, homesteading, classic machinery, and heirloom plants. Each of us at Ogden is committed to being an active, positive member of the communities we support. We’re connected. Kim Scholer for example, a happy Dane and contributor to Motorcycle Classics, gifted me the next selection for Mother Earth Living’s book club: The Year of Living Danishly. Helen Russell writes of her first year living in Denmark. She wrestles with the change of relocation — just as, in small ways, we wrestle with seasonal change — and gives us well-researched food-for-thought.

Ogden Publications is changing, too. We’re preparing a new business paradigm that we think will better serve our communities and make us a more sustainable business in the process. Beginning sometime in 2019 — likely in the first half of the year — we’ll embark on a new mission where we no longer look at ourselves as a magazine and events business, but rather as a truly community-inspiring wellspring that feeds and is fed by an enthusiastic, engaged community of individuals. And so, in the future, you won’t simply subscribe to one or more of our magazines; you’ll instead choose a membership in one or more of our communities. Oh, don’t worry, you’ll receive the magazines in the mail as before, but for the same price as a subscription, you’ll also receive full access to our soon-to-be gated websites; exclusive access to premium content, such as podcasts and videos; fixed discounts on books and other goods in our store; reduced prices at events and access to some member-only components at those events; and more, as the benefits package is still being built. Change can be uncomfortable, but growth almost always follows.
