Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) increases energy and endurance, promotes longevity, supports sexual vitality, calms the mind, enhances mental function, rejuvenates tissues, strengthens immune function, encourages restful sleep and helps the body overcome imbalances caused by stress, poor diet, environmental toxins or lack of sleep. General dosage guidelines: one 500-mg capsule daily.

Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus). Indigenous to Siberia and northeastern China, eleuthero has been used for at least 2,000 years to improve general health and increase energy and longevity. Many studies have shown the herb to be an invaluable aid for enhancing stress-resistance. General dosage guidelines: up to nine 500-mg capsules per day. For standardized products, follow manufacturer’s directions.

Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng). A slow-growing woodland plant, ginseng has been revered for more than 5,000 years as a premier herbal vitality tonic. Research shows that ginseng increases endurance, relieves fatigue, bolsters immunity, helps regulate cholesterol and blood sugar, and enhances mental function. General dosage guidelines: up to four 500-mg capsules daily. For standardized products, follow manufacturer’s directions.

Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea). In Russia and many Scandinavian countries, rhodiola is considered an official botanical medicine commonly prescribed to treat fatigue, improve work performance, alleviate depression and improve resistance to physical and psychological stress. General dosage guidelines: 2 to 4 capsules daily of a product standardized to contain 3 to 5 percent rosavins and 1 percent salidroside.

Calm in a Cup

Herbalist and acupuncturist Christopher Hobbs formulated this tea to infuse a feeling of calmness throughout your body and spirit. Drink a cup several times a day or just before bed.

1 quart boiling water
1 tablespoon linden flower
1 tablespoon chamomile flower
1 tablespoon eleuthero root
1 tablespoon passionflower
1 tablespoon dried orange peel
1/2 teaspoon stevia leaf, if desired

Pour boiling water over herbs and cover the pan, then let the mixture steep for 15 minutes. Strain and enjoy. Makes 4 cups.
