The Body Mass Index (BMI) determines healthy weight ranges based on height (it is not accurate, however, for very muscular individuals). To calculate your BMI, determine your weight in pounds and divide by your height in inches squared, then multiply the equation by 703. To determine the BMI of a woman 5’7″ tall (67 inches) and 150 pounds, divide 150 by 4,489 (67 inches squared) and multiply by 703 to yield a BMI of 23.5. Don’t care for math? Online BMI calculators will do the work for you; you can find one at www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/calc-bmi.htm. A BMI of less than 18.5 is considered underweight; 18.5 to 24.9 is normal; 25 to 29.9 is overweight; 30 and above is obese.
