  • Clean air: The new political hot topic?

Those running for office better start paying attention to the environment, as the subject is emerging as an important issue for voters across party lines.

A Zogby International post-election poll shows that 57 percent of voters said that it was important for them to vote for candidates who supported the reduction of global warming pollution. In 2006, this was important to just 50 percent of the voters.

Furthermore, 78 percent of voters think that investing in clean energy is important to revitalizing the U.S. economy; broken down by party affiliation, 96 percent of democrats, 77 percent of independents and 58 percent of republicans think this way.

Not surprisingly young voters, (87 percent of 18-24 year olds and 80 percent of 18-29 year olds), are the ones who most strongly support clean energy investment. But other voting groups are also becoming good supporters of environmental causes, such as 94 percent of black and 84 percent of Hispanic voters.

The poll was commissioned by the National Wildlife Federation , and was conducted by Zogby International  November 5-6, 2008. It has a margin of error of +/- 1.7 percent.
