In an effort to reduce landfill waste, Reunion Island Coffee will switch from traditional paper cups to compostable coffee cups. Based in Ontario, Canada, Reunion Island is a wholesale coffee retailer that specializes in fair trade and certified-organic coffees and teas. A supplier for many offices, cafes, restaurants and hotels in North America, Reunion Island Coffee lets vendors stock and sell its coffees and teas. Vendors that sell Reunion Island coffees will now only be supplied with compostable cups.

The new compostable cups are made from a combination of paper and compostable polyactic acid (PLA). The cups decompose in a controlled environment in less than 90 days. First the moisture and heat of the compost pile break down the PLA, creating lactic acid. Then microorganisms in the soil consume and digest the lactic acid, resulting in carbon dioxide, water and humus. This breakdown process prevents the waste of paper coffee cups from filling up landfills. Reunion Island’s paper cups meet the requirements for composting in municipal and industrial aerobic composting facilities.

On average, 58 billion paper cups are thrown away each year in the United States. If all of those paper cups were recycled, it would take away 645,000 tons of waste from the landfills. To help cut back, Reunion Island Coffee’s new compostable cups create 96 percent less waste than traditional plastic cups and are packaged in plants that use green electricity.

Reunion Island Coffee is dedicated to sustainable coffee farming. Imported from more than 20 countries, Reunion Island Coffee products are certified organic and fair trade-approved.
