The BP oil leak may be plugged for now, but the Gulf Coast oil disasters aren’t over yet. Vermillion 380, an offshore oil production rig owned by Mariner Energy, exploded 80 miles off the central coast of Louisiana today, injuring one worker. A total of 13 workers were onboard the platform at the time of the explosion. All 13 workers were rescued from the water surrounding the rig this morning, and the injured worker was transported to a hospital in nearby Terrebonne Parish.
Unlike the floating Deepwater Horizon drilling rig that exploded in April, Vermillion 380 is a fixed platform. Although it has yet to be determined whether an oil leak will result from the explosion, the platform was not involved in drilling or oil and gas production at the time of the explosion, decreasing concerns over a disaster similar to the oil leak caused by the explosion of BP’s rig.
