Greenpeace Activists Protest at G20 Summit in Pittsburgh

Greenpeace activists rappelling off the West End Pittsburgh Bridge unfurled a giant banner in protest of slow progress in the fight against climate change a day before the G20 summit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

World leaders gathering for tomorrow’s G20 summit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, were greeted with an unusual “road sign” as they passed under the West End Pittsburgh Bridge. Greenpeace activists rappelling off the bridge held an 80-foot by 30-foot banner with the message “Danger. Climate Destruction Ahead. Reduce CO2 Emissions Now.”

The summit will be the final time the G20 leaders meet before the Copenhagen climate summit, and decisions made in Pittsburgh will likely set the stage for discussions in December. One of the key issues that will be discussed at the summit is economic recovery as it deals with climate change. A recent report from Greenpeace and the European Renewable Energy Council showed that if governments switched from carbon intensive energy to renewable energy 8 million jobs could be supported by 2030. Green advocates are hoping for a show of leadership from leaders of the industrialized nations when it comes to developing clean energy technologies that could reduce carbon emissions and create jobs.

World leaders will also discuss financing climate change in developing countries. In July, President Obama and other world leaders asked the G20 finance committee to work on climate finance and report back at the Pittsburgh summit. The money would be used to help developing nations adjust to unavoidable climate impacts, build a clean energy economy and preserve tropical rainforests.
