Canadian Advisory Group Recommends Carbon Tax

Polluters pay more.

| January 2008 Web

The National Roundtable on the Environment and the Economy recommended a nationwide tax on carbon emissions Monday.  The panel’s report said a tax could be placed either directly on distributors or individual companies that create pollution through burning fuel.

Don Wharton, vice president of Transalta Corp., Canada’s largest CO2 producer wasn’t opposed to the tax because it included consumers and companies. “All of us have to play a role,” Wharton said.

The Canadian government almost uniformly opposed the panel’s recommendation. Environmental minister John Baird rejected the proposal, but said that Canadian government would continue on its current course to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2020.
