Jon Bon Jovi's Philadelphia Soul Charitable Foundation and developer HELP USA have joined together to build Newark Genesis Apartments, an affordable green housing complex in New Jersey. The apartments will accommodate low-income and special-needs persons, and will be built with eco-friendly design as laid out in New Jersey’s Green Future program.
The green components of the program include geothermal heating system; low VOC interior paints, finishes, adhesives and sealants; hard surface flooring in high-use areas to reduce waste and increase indoor air quality; and Energy Star-qualified appliances (including dishwasher, clothes washer and refrigerators) and lighting fixtures.
Twenty-five percent of the units will be used for tenants living with AIDS, and the project also includes building a 2,500-square-foot community center.
New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine, Jon Bon Jovi and Newark Mayor Cory Booker broke ground for the new building September 2 in Newark, New Jersey.
