One Step Closer to the Great Outdoors

No Child Left Inside Acts passes at the House of Representatives

| September 2008 Web

Children in the United States are closer to having more access to environmental education thanks to a bill passed by the House of Representative on September 18. The No Child Left Inside Act responds to the growing trend of children spending more and more time indoors and has been championed by the No Child Left Inside Coalition since 2006.

The bill, which has been introduced under the same name in both houses, has bipartisan support, and it aims to better expose children to the outdoors for their health and that of the environment.

No Child Left Inside would make funds available for states to provide environmental education to children; at the same time it would fund those organizations and agencies which are helping make environmental education better known and successful.

The bill, which was introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. John Sarbanes , (D-Md), and in the Senate by Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), has the support of the National Wildlife Federation , as well as the Sierra Club and other environmental organizations.
