Katrina Cottages with Character

This $35,000 cottage is a cheerier option to a FEMA trailer.

| May/June 2006

Instead of a bare-bones FEMA trailer, Gulf Coasters who lost their homes during Hurricane Katrina have a cheerier option: a 308-square-foot “Katrina cottage” with tall windows, a large porch, graceful proportions and a cost less than $35,000. Designed by New Yorker Marianne Cusato, this demonstration cottage made a big impression at the January 2006 International Builders Show in Orlando, Florida, and was donated to a homeless Mississippi family. The cottage is appealing because of its Gulf Coast style and potential to be converted to a guesthouse or studio after permanent housing is built.
