Harry Potter Saves Trees

Scholastic is publishing all 12 million U.S. copies of J.K. Rowling’s 784-page Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on paper that contains a minimum of 30 percent post-consumer waste fiber. Plus, 65 percent of the 16,700 tons of paper will be certified sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council. The deluxe edition (100,000 copies) will be printed on 100 percent post-consumer waste paper and made using wind energy.

Sustainable Seats

Kids’ furniture doesn’t have to be expensive or wasteful. Foldschool is a collection of free cardboard furniture for kids, handmade by you. You simply download the patterns, follow the instructions and assemble a chair, rocker or stool. Donations support the Foldschool mission: ecological design that’s affordable to all.

Kingly Conscience

Britain’s Prince Charles is determined to reduce his royal carbon footprint. He’s adding energy-saving features to his many residences and is planning to renovate Kinloch Castle, on a remote Scottish island, to include solar panels, a green activities center, rainwater harvesting and its own power supply. He’s also reportedly building a $9.8 million, 8,500-square-foot eco-friendly mansion for his son Prince William, featuring solar-powered heat and sheep-wool insulation.
