Picking beans is an easy task for children.

Kids love to get out in the garden. Here are just a few things they can do:

■ Plant the big seeds: pumpkins, squash, beans, corn

■ Fill peat pots with soil for starting seeds in the spring

■ Grow their own vegetables in their own small plot

■ Weed in beds with plants such as onions, which are easy to distinguish from weeds and easy to replant if they make a mistake
