14 Sustainable Food Companies You Can Trust

Shopping for healthy, responsibly produced food can be a challenge. From confusing labels and long lists of complex ingredients to loose government regulation, identifying the foods that are truly good for our families and the environment can be a tricky proposition. Some companies, however, have made their business out of offering reliably healthy products that prioritize the health of their customers, their producers and the environment. In looking to identify such sustainable food companies, we partnered with the folks at GoodGuide, an organization that rates hundreds of companies on their health, sustainability and social attributes. We asked GoodGuide to offer us their top picks for national food companies that offer a wide range of products—focusing on those that offer healthy items and avoiding companies owned by larger parent companies that may not be doing as much good. This time, we aimed to include a wide range of products—in the future, we plan to offer more specific lists of companies that offer healthy foods in certain categories. Grounds for Change

Overview: A family-owned and operated coffee-roasting company in the Pacific Northwest, Grounds for Change is committed to providing a sustainably, fairly produced product that benefits the environment, its farmers and its consumers. The company’s mission is “to support social equity and environmental sustainability through fair trade, organic, shade-grown coffee.”

Health: Certified organic; grown by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and conservation

Environment: Purchases 100 percent renewable energy for facilities; offsets 100 percent of nonrenewable energy used in business operations and transportation; uses 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper; donates jute coffee bags to local organic farms for use in erosion control; a percentage of profits goes toward the Northwest Shade Coffee Campaign, Save Our Wild Salmon and; shade-grown coffee prevents the clear-cutting of forest

Social: Fair trade certified, meaning products are grown by farmers who receive a fair price for their harvest, work under safe working conditions, and are able to invest in social and business development projects such as scholarship programs and health- care services

Environment: Offsets 100 percent of electrical energy with renewable energy credits; offers carbon-neutral shipping

Social: Fair trade certified; full ingredient disclosure; founded the Well Earth sustainable sourcing program that evaluates potential suppliers based on worker safety and fair treatment, sustainable growing and production practices, food safety and quality, and environmental and community impact

Numi Organic Tea

Overview: Numi Organic Tea was founded by a brother-sister duo looking to introduce exotic, premium organic and fair trade teas to the U.S. market. The company is rooted in the principle of creating a healthful product that nurtures people and honors the planet.

Health: USDA certified organic; made with 100 percent herbs, fruits, flowers and spices; no artificial flavorings or fragrances

Environment: Production facility powered by solar energy; purchases renewable energy credits to offset emissions from supply chain; outer packaging made from 85 percent post-consumer waste and soy-based inks; tea bags made from biodegradable filter paper; no use of plastic shrink wrap

Social: Uses fair trade-certified ingredients for half of its blends and 80 percent of its raw ingredients; Fair Labor Practices-certified; works with Community Gatepath, an organization that employs disabled adults, to package assorted boxes and gift packs

Overview: A farmer-owned cooperative, Organic Valley was founded in 1988 to support rural communities and protect the health of family farms through organic agriculture. The cooperative’s 1,687 family farms produce an array of meat and dairy products.

Health: USDA certified organic; does not use synthetic hormones; antibiotics only used as a last resort for suffering animals if holistic treatments don’t work; non-GMO ingredients

Environment: Researches and promotes on-farm renewable energy projects; cooperative model of production allows food to be sold closer to the farm where it was produced, requiring less energy to ship food long distances

Social: Practices humane treatment of all animals; builds stronger local economies by promoting family farms and locally produced food

Lundberg Family Farms

Environment: Powers 20 percent of energy needs through solar energy; partners with Renewable Choice Energy in Colorado to install wind farms to offset conventional energy use

Vital Choice Seafood

Overview: Founded by a fisherman with more than 20 years’ experience of wild fishing in Alaska, Vital Choice Seafood offers customers sustainably harvested wild seafood products.

Health: All seafood products free of antibiotics, pesticides, synthetic coloring agents and GMOs commonly used in fish farms; wild salmon provides four times more vitamin D than farmed salmon and is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids

Environment: Wild fisheries certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council and the State of Alaska; offsets shipping emissions by financing the construction of renewable energy projects; CubeCycle program allows for recycling of EPS foam shipping containers

Social: Contributes a portion of net profits to organizations such as Healthy Child Healthy World and the Natural Resources Defense Council that are devoted to improving the health and well-being of people and our planet

Nature’s Path Foods

Overview: A “fiercely independent” family company based in British Columbia with three distribution centers in North America, Nature’s Path’s guiding principle is “always leave the soil better than you found it.”

Health: Committed to using quality ingredients to make healthy, vegetarian and vegan foods that contain a wide variety of whole grains; includes a number of gluten-free items; non-GMO ingredients

Environment: Near-zero-waste headquarters include a rooftop garden, a rainwater harvesting system and an on-site composting facility; this year, donated $500,000 to the campaign to label genetically engineered food products; buys non-organic land in order to convert it to organic farms

Overview: In addition to sustaining its business and brands, Clif Bar and Company’s “5 Aspirations” include sustaining its community, its employees and the planet.

Environment: Approximately 70 percent of ingredients are organic, with plans to be 80 percent organic by 2015; corporate mission includes reducing carbon footprint and building a supply chain that connects more directly with farmers

Ella’s Kitchen
