Celebrate National Ice Cream Day with Natural, Organic and Fair Trade Ice Creams

Open your freezer and pull out that tub of double chocolate chunk ice cream you’ve been craving–this Sunday, July 18, is National Ice Cream Day! Even if you’re not sticking to your diet, stick to your values with organic and fair trade ice cream options. (We even threw in a healthy option for those of you who are sticking to your diet.)

Natural, Healthy Ice Cream

While a little indulgence can boost our spirits and benefit our emotional health, our bodies are less likely to thank us for downing an entire gallon of rocky road. Many Americans have a sweet tooth, but overindulging in sugary foods is wreaking havoc on our bodies. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 34 percent of American adults are overweight or obese, conditions that can lead to more notable health problems such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

If you want to limit your sugar consumption, check out Clemmy’s Ice Cream’s natural ice cream selection. Instead of sugar, Clemmy’s Ice Cream sweetens its product with xylitol, a naturally occurring low-calorie sweetener. Xylitol has the same sweetness as sugar, but it doesn’t cause a spike in blood sugar, making it a healthier option, especially for diabetics.

Organic Ice Cream

Several companies offer organic ice cream options. Stonyfield sells USDA certified organic ice cream in vanilla, dark chocolate, java, crème caramel, cookies ‘n cream and vanilla chai. Alden’s Ice Cream also makes USDA certified organic ice cream in vanilla, strawberry, blackberry, chocolate chocolate chip, mint chip, butter brittle, peanut butter and chip, and cookies ‘n cream

Fair Trade Ice Cream

If your ice cream concerns are more ethical than health-related, serve up a scoop of fair trade ice cream. Ben & Jerry’s offers several flavors of fair trade ice cream, and the company announced last January that it will try to use as many fair-trade certified ingredients for its ice creams as possible by 2013.
