Lower Your Flow: 10 Ways to Save Water at Home

Save water at home with these tips for reducing household water use.

  • Reduce your water consumption with these 10 tips.

A family of four uses 400 gallons of water every day. The EPA recommends these ways to save.

1.Wash only full loads of laundry, or use the appropriate water-level or load-size selection. Wash in cold water.

2.Turn off water while shaving or brushing teeth.

3. Take short showers instead of baths.

4. Keep drinking water in the refrigerator instead of letting the faucet run until the water is cool.

5. Scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher. Wash only full loads.

6. Repair all leaks. A leaky toilet can waste 200 gallons a day. To test your toilet, put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. Wait a few minutes. If coloring appears in the toilet bowl, you have a leak.

7. Water the lawn or garden during the coolest part of the day (early morning is best).

I empty my dehumidifiers into the washing machine, and when I run water until it gets hot I collect it in gallon milk jugs and use that to flush the toilets
