Mary Ekstrand is a freelance writer living on Liberty Bay in the Seattle area. She has grown a vegetable garden every summer for about 50 years, and tended an orchard for about 30 years. It produces three kinds of plums, three kinds of apples, peaches, pears, cherries, persimmons, and figs. She has always been committed to living simply and living well, and she continues to work on ways to do that.
