Connected to warm memories, or hopes for happiness to come, the cheerful scents of the holidays often evoke the flavors of the season.

  • 1 tablespoon dried orange peel
  • 4 star anise
  • 6 to 8 whole cloves
  • 2 whole allspice berries
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  1. Combine ingredients and wrap in a plastic bag secured with a ribbon. Add an instruction card explaining to add the spices to 2 quarts of apple cider and simmer for 30 minutes.
  2. Remove the spices and serve hot. Sweeten, if desired. For a variation, add the ingredients to 2 cups of water and simmer to scent the kitchen and adjoining rooms.
