Now and Then: Make a Seasonal Pomander

Perfume and decorate your home this holiday season with this simple craft.

| December/January 1997

• Select a fresh unblemished orange. With a pushpin, perforate the skin, either in a pattern or uniformly, as densely as you like. Insert the stem of a clove into each hole, discarding any that break.

• If desired, mix a couple of tablespoons of ground spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, ginger, coriander, and allspice, in any combination, with a few drops of an essential oil such as clove or citrus. Dust the clove-studded orange with the mixture.

• With a pin, attach a ribbon and a loop for hanging. The pomander will dry as it hangs.
