Classic Strawberry Shortcake  
Serves 12 

Everyone loves this classic American favorite, but you’ll love it even more with homemade buttery shortcakes.

1 1/4 cups strawberries
1/4 cup plus 1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4  teaspoon salt
1/3 cup chilled butter, cut into small pieces
1 cup whole milk
1 egg yolk, beaten
1 tablespoon coarse raw sugar
1/3 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2. Slice strawberries and mix with 1/4 cup sugar. Cover and refrigerate.

3. In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, 1/3  cup sugar and butter using a pastry cutter or two forks, until the mixture looks like bread crumbs.
