Homemade Liqueurs with Herbs: Italian Herb Liqueur

Makes 1 pint
Italian herb liqueur is a sweet combination that's full of flavor.

  • 1½ cups vodka
  • 6 bay leaves
  • 1 sprig rosemary
  • 10 mint leaves
  • 10 chamomile flowers
  • 10 sweet basil leaves
  • 3 cloves
  • 3 saffron filaments
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water
  1. Combine vodka, herbs and lemon zest in a clean glass jar. Cover and let stand in a cool, dark place for 3 weeks, giving the mixture a shake every few days.
  2. Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan. Boil until the sugar has completely dissolved. Allow to cool.
  3. Strain vodka mixture through a coffee filter into a clean jar or bottle with an airtight lid. Sweeten to taste with the sugar syrup. Cover and let stand for 4 weeks. Store in a cool, dark place for up to 1 year.
