Yikes! How to Save a Wet Cell Phone

If you’ve ever dropped your cell phone in the toilet, you’re in good company. A 2011 consumer survey by Plaxo, a leading online address book, found that 19 percent of cell phone users—almost one in five—admit to accidentally dropping a phone into a toilet. But now a Dallas entrepreneur has come up with a solution that safely and economically revives wet phones and other electronics.

Kevin Cooper was motivated to develop Yikes! Phone and Tablet Rescue after meeting a waiter in an Italian restaurant.

“He once held a senior management position with a Fortune 500 company,” Kevin recalled. “One Friday night, he went out for dinner and his phone got wet during the evening. When he returned to work on Monday, he discovered he had missed a voicemail from his boss requesting a password to solve a serious work issue, and he lost his job. I knew there had to be a more effective way to prolong the life of phones exposed to water. Yikes! can’t reverse that waiter’s unfortunate experience, but it can help other people.”

Yikes! Phone & Tablet Rescue contains two sealable plastic bags and thousands of tiny Magic Blue Beads of extra-strength silica gel desiccant, a product that pulls humidity from the environment. Silica gel, or silicon dioxide (SiO2), is a natural material found in quartz. Manufacturers pack envelopes of silica with leather, vitamin and food products to prevent mold and reduce spoilage.

“My wife, Nicole, and I have two kids, and she has worked for the City of Dallas Office of Environmental Quality for five years,” Kevin said. “She makes sure that everything in our home is safe and natural. I knew Yikes! had to meet her strict standards.”

To revive a phone exposed to water, simply remove the phone’s battery, SIM Card (if applicable) and external memory card. Set them aside. Put the phone (only) into the small plastic bag with the Magic Blue Beads and seal it securely. The second, larger bag is for tablets and other electronics.

Phones that suffer light exposure to water should be left in the bag for 12 hours. If fully submerged, leave it for 24 hours. For ultimate drying, wait 48 hours. After drying, remove the phone from the bag, replace the battery and card(s) and charge the phone. Chances are your phone will be as good as new.

“As the name implies, Yikes! Phone & Tablet Rescue works equally well on tablets, as well as iPods, gaming devices, cameras, hearing aids, wrist watches and other electronics exposed to water,” he added. “It’s most effective on devices that have been under water for 60 seconds or less.”

The product is available at YikesRescue.com for $9.99 and via Amazon.com. At that price, it’s easy and economical to keep a couple on hand for unexpected mishaps. In an emergency, overnight shipping is available. Yikes! Phone & Tablet Rescue comes with a seven-day money-back guarantee.
