The Write Stuff: Recycled Plastic Pens for Back to School

I’m one of those organized people you love to hate. To-do lists, desk organizers, Post-Its, planners—I’ve got it all. So it comes as no surprise that I love back-to-school shopping.

While the organizing materials are important to me, I also have a fixation on pens and pencils. I sometimes fall victim to pen obsession, refusing to use anything but one specific pen for all of my writing tasks. My current obsession is the Pentel Hyper G Ultra Smooth Liquid Gel Roller. This retractable liquid gel pen glides like melted butter over a piece of paper, producing a smooth line and a polished look.

Being left-handed, I’m rather picky about my pens. I often get ink on the side of my hand as I write across the paper, smearing everything. This ink doesn’t smudge, and doesn’t leave any markings on my hand. To make things even better, Pentel Hyper G Ultra Smooth Liquid Gel Roller is made of 57 percent recycled plastic, and uses nontoxic ink. Hello, obsession. I just might have to buy all eight colors to color-coordinate my planner.

The Hyper G pen comes from Pentel’s Recycology line, which includes many other recycled plastic options for back-to-school. The Handy-Line S Highlighters look perfect for highlighting notes and studying for tests. The point is retractable and the outer shell is made from 54 percent post-consumer recycled plastic. Run out of ink? Simply buy a refill and pop it in. With six vibrant colors—orange, yellow, green, pink, blue, and purple—they make my color-coding fantasy a reality.
