I would never consider myself an actual dancer, but I took classes during my youth, will occasionally attend a contemporary class on a weeknight just for fun, and am seriously obsessed with the Fox television show So You Think You Can Dance. So I was really excited to taste the three health-food bars I received in my work mailbox from a company that targets its nutrition bars specifically to dance athletes. (Yes, athletes. Have you watched this video?!)
Barre, a kitschy name that alludes to both nutrition bars and the handrail dancers use during warm-up exercises, is a company started by ballet dancers looking for dancer-friendly snacks. Each Barre bar is vegan and features whole, nutritious superfoods that will boost energy while keeping the body lean. And although these bars are targeted to dancers, they are truly great for anyone looking for a compact source of nutrition.
Right now, Barre only offers three flavor varieties: Pirouette Cinnamon Pecan, Black Swan Chocolate Berry, and their newest flavor, Ballerina Spirulina. Health-food bars like these are typically too rich in real-food flavors for me to enjoy, always leaving a bitter taste in my mouth. But I loved the cinnamon pecan and spirulina flavors. Pirouette Cinnamon Pecan, the original of the Barre flavors, comprises of nutrient-rich dates, walnuts, peanuts, pecans, vanilla and cinnamon, along with hemp seed and rolled oats. It is also made without unrefined sugars, using agave nectar in the place of a less healthy refined sweetener, and features ground flaxseed, an herb that gives this bar a healthy dose of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. Ballerina Spirulina is also very good. It is a medley of nutrient-rich dates, walnuts, peanuts, pecans, dried coconut flakes, spirulina, vanilla and sea salt, as well as hemp seed and rolled oats. It is also made with agave nectar and ground flaxseed.
The Black Swan Chocolate Berry bar, however, demands an acquired taste. For me, it was just a lot to take on at once. And this isn't just because I am not a fan of dark chocolate. The flavors—cranberries, cocoa powder and sunflower seed butter, along with the other standard Barre ingredients (dates, walnuts, pecans, hemp seed, oats, agave nectar and ground flaxseed)—were just too rich to take all at once.
I would love to buy these bars and tote them around with me as snacks for after the occasional dance class, or keep them around the office for a mid-afternoon snack. Unfortunately it is not sold at a store near me. But it may be sold at a store near you! Click here to find Barre bars.
