GinaGreetings from Anaheim, California! This year I had the opportunity to travel to the Natural Products Expo West again. It was a great show. I enjoyed meeting lots of people and discovering the best of the newest products that I just know you are dying to learn more about.

On Thursday, March 10, our friends from the American Botanical Council hosted their annual ABCelebration. During the reception, three important people were recognized for their tremendous work in the herbal industry.

3-22-2011-botanical medicine textbook• The James A. Duke in Botanical Literature award was presented to Dr. Aviva Romm.

Romm recently wrote the textbook Botanical Medicine for Women's Health. She is an expert in midwifery, women’s health, and women’s and pediatric botanical medicine. Her book, a blend of traditional and scientific data, contains plant profiles, principle uses and safety information for the most common herbs used in botanical medicine for women. According to Dr. Duke, this book “has an appropriate mix, to my taste, of folklore and modern and recent scientific evidence.” Pick up this book for an in-depth reference on women’s health.

3-22-2011-stevia sweetener• The recipient of the Norman R. Farnsworth Excellence in Botanical Research award was Professor A. Douglas Kinghorn, PhD, the Jack L. Beal Professor and Chair in Natural Products Chemistry and Pharmacognosy in the College of Pharmacy at Ohio State University.

Kinghorn was recognized for his work in botanical and/or pharmacognostic research. He has spent many years researching the isolation, characterization and biological evaluation of natural products of higher plants of tropical and temperate origin. He is also an expert in plant-based sweeteners, such as stevia (Stevia rebaudiana), has co-authored about 450 research articles, book chapters and reviews, and co-edited six books.

3-22-2011-turmericforce• New Chapter was awarded the Varro E. Tyler Commercial Investment in Phytomedicinal award. New Chapter, a manufacturer and distributor of premium whole-food and organic dietary supplements, probiotics, vitamins, minerals, herbal therapeutics, fish oil, and mushrooms.

We recently recommended their Turmericforce capsules in the June/July 2011 issue of The Herb Companion magazine.
