One of the many perks of being an apprentice at Fair Share Farm is learning practical homesteading skills from people who truly walk the walk. Now I can see the skills I’ve read about in homesteading books—Make Your Place: Affordable, Sustainable Nesting Skills by Raleigh Briggs is my go-to these days—and in my favorite Natural Home & Garden and Mother Earth News articles in action as well as learn new ones every day. And right now, I’m really digging this simple homemade fruit fly trap.

Fruit Fly Trap
A mason jar, a piece of paper for the cone, some fruit for bait, and a couple pieces of tape are all it takes to make this simple fruit fly trap. This trap is an effective way to rid your home of these pesky bugs while keeping chemicals out of the equation. Photo By Dani Hurst.

What you’ll need:

·     A mason jar

·     A piece of paper

·     Fruit fly bait (opt for something sweet like some fruit or a melon rind)

·     Tape

What you’ll do:

1.    Roll the piece of paper into a cone with a small opening at one end. Make sure the opening is big enough for the fruit flies to enter, but small enough so they can’t find their way out.

2.    Place your bait at the bottom of the jar, then tape your cone around the mouth of the jar so it won’t move around and allow the flies to escape.

Once you’re ready to rid yourself of the pests, you’ll have to choose a mode of disposal. Rebecca, one of the farmers at Fair Share Farm, suggests a no-fuss gassing method: widen the hole at the tip of the cone with a knife, pour in ¼ cup white vinegar and a tablespoon of baking soda, screw on the lid and swish around a few times to mix. Then you can simply wash them down the drain when you clean out the jar.

This homemade fruit fly trap is not only easy to make, but it’s also a great way to keep your home pest-free without using harmful chemicals.
