Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnailThis simple project brings rustic beauty into your home and makes use of humble materials. Former Natural Home & Garden art director Susan Wasinger, who dreamed it up, says that a few thumb-thick branches will cover a surprising amount of square footage. She warns, however, that “once you start seeing the transformation, no plain surface may ever be safe again!”

Terra cotta pots, old vases or recycled aluminum cans
Low-VOC, nontoxic glue such as RooWood Glue
Coarse sandpaper

Lopping shears or long-handled pruners

1. Using shears, cut branches into slices about ½-inch thick. You will need slices in a variety of diameters to cover the surface completely.

2. If you are using an aluminum can, rough up the surface with sandpaper so the wood will stick.

3. Start at the bottom of the pot or can and work your way up. Dab glue on both the wood slice and the pot’s surface to ensure a good bond.

4. Always dry-fit each piece in place first to ensure that it will fit nicely with the other pieces. Fit tiny slices into small, awkward spaces.
