Turn a Clawfoot Tub into a Sofa (Just Like Audrey Hepburn's)

Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnailLooking for some great green projects for Earth Day weekend? Check out the gems among the top 10 finalists in Green is Universal and Etsy’s The Art of Reuse Contest.

Because I’m a die-hard Audrey Hepburn fan, I spotted my favorite project immediately. I’ve always loved the clawfoot bathtub-cum-sofa that Hepburn’s character Holly Golightly lounges on in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Inspired by that idea, Lawrence, Kansas-based Ruff House Art turned a century-old cast iron tub into a fully customizable sofa.

This project is well beyond my skill set, so I’m placing it in the “maybe some day” file. To pull it off, the tub opening must be painstakingly cut and smoothed, then stripped of paint. Ruff House Art repaints the outside of the tub and the original claw feet using low-VOC paint and hand polishes the inside porcelain. A cushion is custom cut for the tub bottom, and matching pillows can be added. (Ruff House Art will make one of these for me for $1,700—also beyond my reach right now, but maybe some day.)

Judges will now vote on a winner of the Art of Reuse Contest, but all the entries are still up on the site for browsing (and stealing ideas). The top 10 projects include a Firefighter Coat Turned Messenger Bag, a Re-Zip It! Zipper Brooch, Weego the Scarecrow, Tab Top Pet Collars, a Coloring Markers Jump Rope, Flying Alumifish, Gift Card Earrings, a Brightly Colored Twirly Skirt of Upcycled Sweaters and a 20 Minute Dog Sweater.
