Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnailLast weekend Design Industries Fighting AIDS sponsored Dining by Design, an exhibit and formal charity dinner that featured tabletops created by top-tier designers at Pier 94 in New York City. For its attention to sustainability and healthy living, architect Eric Corey Freed’s installation stands head and shoulders above the rest. Eric’s dining room is a wonderful resource for the best of the best green products for dining--and beyond. Eric’s dining room, sponsored by sponsored by Liebherr, a worldwide leader in green refrigeration, is a wonderful resource for the best of the best green products.

“Utilizing natural, reclaimed and recycled materials, our structure treads lightly on the earth while demonstrating that green design can also be beautiful,” Eric states.

Surrounded by lightweight foam panels veneered with recycled wood, Eric’s structure has a ceiling made from recycled polypropylene bead board and a floor made from industrial scraps of formaldehyde-free sugar palm wood. The structure is lit by gorgeous LightBlocks panels made from recycled and recyclable plastics using a low-toxic process and a hand-bent MioCulture chandelier made from recycled steel with a zero-VOC finish.

One of my favorite companies, IceStone, provided a gorgeous table surface made from recycled sapphire-colored glass and cement. IceStone is made without harmful chemicals in Brooklyn, in a facility powered by renewable energy. Gracing the table, Bambu plates and utensils made from renewable bamboo were intermingled with Eleek’s decorative and functional sushi trays made from 100 percent recycled cast aluminum, MioCulture cork trivets and reclaimed, sandblasted glasses designed by Michelle Ivankovik (available at GreenDepot, New York’s finest green building and furnishing supplier).

Next, Dining by Design travels to Kansas City, where it will be open to the public from April 30-May 1, and Chicago, where it will be open November 4-6. It’s worth checking out—if only to see Eric’s wizardry.
