Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnailTomorrow at 8:30 p.m., WWF is asking the world to turn off the lights for one hour in a stand against climate change. Earth Hour, a global sustainability movement involving more than 50 million people in 128 countries, aims to give people a voice and a means of working together to create a better future for our planet.

Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, with 2.2 million people and more than 2,000 businesses. By last year, hundreds of millions of people were taking part, and global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge went dark for the hour. Last year marked the biggest Earth Hour ever, as a record 128 countries and territories joined the global gathering.

Interested in taking part this year? The Earth Hour site suggests the following options to show your support.

  1. Turn off your lights at 8:30 p.m. on March 26, wherever you are in the world and sign up to let Earth Hour know you will be taking part.
  2. Run your own Earth Hour event, street or house party with friends and family. Add your event to our Global Meetup Map.
  3. Take Earth Hour beyond the Hour by taking action for the planet and telling us all about it.
  4. Tell the world through social media, or add our tools and downloads to your blogs and websites.
  5. Encourage your local government or community groups to run Earth Hour in your region.
  6. Rally your office or business to get involved.
  7. Make a lantern and send it your friends
