Home appliance maker LG Electronics has done a great job of focusing on energy efficiency for the past few years. Now the company is promoting products for an “eco-chic” lifestyle through a stylish, environmentally friendly appliance line. The star is its bottom-freezer refrigerator, which was named the best “eco-chic” product at the Maison & Object living design exhibition in Paris last month.

LG’s refrigerator offers more storage capacity than standard-size refrigerators while reducing energy consumption through “linear compressor” technology. Typical refrigerators have a reciprocating compressor that circulates coolant using a crank mechanism; a linear compressor model eliminates the crank mechanism and delivers the coolant directly without any unnecessary rotations, which cuts back on energy loss from friction, flow and heat exchange.

The compressor is the most important part of a refrigerator’s cooling system and accounts for 80 percent of a typical refrigerator’s energy use. LG’s bottom-freezer refrigerator provides up to 20 percent energy savings over a normal refrigerator, which emits about 740 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

A basic LG bottom-freezer refrigerators costs anywhere from about $1,000 to $1,500, which is fairly comparable to the cost of a typical refrigerator.
