Hot for This Pod: The Sustainsia Work Pod

I want this pod. I’m pretty sure it could save my relationships with my kids, my partner and my colleagues.

I work at home. Because all three bedrooms of my small townhouse are occupied, I sit in the only space I could find for my desk and computer: next to the dining table, looking into the kitchen, with work files and supplies scattered from the closet under the stairs to the secretary in my bedroom. Work permeates my life, and home interrupts my conference calls. I’ve lost control of the boundaries that should exist between work and home. I check emails while my daughter drinks morning tea, even when the “office is closed” cloth is draped on the monitor. (I can’t help myself. My office is right there.) I need an office with a door, and Sustainsia’s 96-square-foot work pod has caught my fancy.

Cabinets above the desk provide ample storage. The bench pulls out into a bed, transforming the space into an extra sleeping area for guests. Photos Courtesy Sustainsia.

This teak-clad, toaster-shaped office annex has rooftop solar panels, R-30 insulation (surely superior to my 1969 townhouse) and reclaimed wood inside. I love its space-saving features, borrowed from boat builders, and its curves. I see myself happily contained and inspired to do my most creative work in one of these sunny pods, with desk space for three large monitors, a Murphy-style table for laying out magazine pages and a pull-out bed (for weekend getaway naps).

I don’t know where I’d put the pod. My back garden is too small, and the best place I’ve come up with—the roof—isn’t likely to get past my conservative HOA. But still, I dream.
