Robyn Griggs Lawrence thumbnailMy favorite new blog needs you!

Fascinated by “simple design that conveys such an immense message against our throwaway society,” Magdalena Akantisz and Lisa Schultz, students at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, started 30 Days, 30 Things as a clearinghouse for projects made from discarded materials. They launched the site on April 16 and will let it run for at least 30 days--but they hope to keep it going much longer. “Our goal is to design beautiful and useful things for 30 days in a row,” they state. But, they promise, “For everyone who collaborates and sends us their project, the blog will be extended for one day. Find trash, be creative and post your masterpieces!”

I’ve already unearthed some gems on this site, including more than one use for old windows, birdhouses made from bread loaves and lamps made from tea tins and candy containers.

What an ingenious use for days-old bread! This project was posted on Day 10. Photo courtesy 30 Days, 30 Things

Posted on Day 2, this lamp is made from toffee containers.

“With this blog we want to show that discarded material isn’t useless, and everyone has the ability to be proactive and start their own upcycling project,” the founders state. “We wish that many people join us to create an endless chain of ideas.”

If you have upcycling ideas to share with this community, send details and photos of your project to Akantisz and Schultz at Keep the upcycling love flowing!
