If you’ve ever thought about buying an electric car, now might be a good time. Later this year Chevrolet will release its newest electric car, the Chevy Volt, along with free 240-volt home charging stations for 4,400 new owners. The Department of Energy is paying for the stations as part of an initiative to encourage Americans to buy more electric cars to improve the way they’re charged. The program will collect data such as average charge time and energy usage to understand how electric cars are charged and driven, and what it would take to get more Americans to use them.

And now for the fine print: The free charging stations are available only to new owners who live in participating program cities and are willing to share their charging information. More information will be available late this year when Chevrolet releases the Volt. Go to www.chevrolet.com/volt to check it out.
